Ai Ye is bitter and pungent in flavor, warm in nature, and acts on spleen, liver and kidney meridians with slightly toxic. It can stop bleeding by warming meridians, expel cold and alleviate pain, lower dampness and kill insects. It is usually used for irregular menstruation, dysmenorrheal, infertility, fetal irritability, hematemesis, nosebleed, blood in the stool, uterine bleeding, chronic diarrhea, vaginal discharge, itching, eczema, scabies, carbuncles, hemorrhoids etc. in TCM. It is also used for washing to treat eczema and itching of the skin and to warm acupuncture points (moxibustion) which can send heat into the interior, and can promote circulation of qi and blood in the meridians by warming. In addition, it is also used as a tea for cold abdominal pain, especially related to menstruation and stops bleeding. Modern pharmacological studies have also confirmed that Aiye contains certain compounds such as beta-caryophyllene which can help enhance the immune system in protecting the body against bacterial and virus intruders and irregular cells cause of inflammation.
